A Snowy Day in the Mountains

It was only our second winter storm of the season and gratefully received in these mountains so prone to drought.  And perhaps another cold storm is on its way.  How we need the precipitation before the dry winds of spring come upon us.  I love the feeling that comes when the heavy clouds lay low, when there is a muted silence outside, and everything in our place slows down. So here is a picture of winter and some playful pictures of some little owls.  Hope you enjoy the scene.

images for ETSY

In the last few days some of my former students helped me out by getting together to 'model' some of the fiber arts I've been making to put on my new ETSY site.  They are so incredibly grown up and so beautiful.  We had great fun, gathering together at the grounds of Sharlott Hall Museum, even though the sun was obscured by high clouds and changed the light conditions.  The museum has beautiful old stone walls, log cabins and a lovely gazebo. So check out these images and then click on my ETSY site to see more.  It is interesting to put together my fiber arts skills and photography skills and see something new emerge.  It is very satisfying.

Felted Tapestry Class at Yavapai College

This past weekend I taught a felted tapestry class at Yavapai College, 12 people came.  It was very successful, I thought the quality of work created was very high.  I love the time away from time such a class develops for a group when we get down to the imaginative work of  creating art.  It felt very healing, then time develops within the hours to share our stories, to see each others genius, to witness how each person has their own sense of touch.  Here are some photos from the class.

Felted Slippers

Another new class that I have begun to teach is 'felted slippers'.  This involves tracing a pattern around our feet, cutting the pattern out of vinyl, then laying four layers of merino fleece around the pattern.  Then the felting begins in earnest.  Here is a picture of the four pairs of slippers made that day.   I learned a lot that day, finer details of how to teach this class.  It is so true that when one teaches something, the teacher learns as much as the students.

Nuno Felting Class

These pictures are from the first nuno felting class I taught recently.  Nuno is a Japanese word that means cloth. Nuno felting then, is felting wool into a cloth base, often silk.  We felted merino fleece into a light weight silk cloth.  The results are a puckered drape to the cloth that yields a more complex fabric.  And it was so much fun!

Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps gradually, without noticing it, you will live along some distant day into the answer. ~Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet
